Brockville and area schools set to close

Almost 30 schools within the public board, including several in Leeds-Grenville counties, are being considered for closure, a staff report to trustees reveals.

The report identifies 29 schools across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are being considered for closure or consolidation, reportedly due to an aging inventory of school buildings and a surplus of almost 10,000 student spaces that “place a drain on future financial resources.”

“We have the equivalent of 33 empty elementary schools,” Stephen Sliwa, director of education for the UCDSB, said on Tuesday.

He said despite the recommendation, no firm decisions have been made.
