Chair Janet McDougald says plan to close Gordon Graydon is ‘what’s best for kids’

She says it hurts to admit it, seeing as Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School is in her ward, but Peel District School Board chair Janet McDougald is in favour of saying goodbye to it.

The south Mississauga high school is the centrepiece of a Pupil Accommodation Review (PAR) recommended by planning staff that proposes its closure by June 2019.

“I don’t want to close any schools, but when you look at what’s best for kids, we believe at this time, this will be what’s best for kids,” McDougald said of the recommendation, which also impacts The Woodlands, Lorne Park, Glenforest and T.L. Kennedy secondary schools.

The staff report calling for the PAR was approved by the Physical Planning and Building Committee on Tuesday and will now be brought to the April 12 regular board meeting for trustees to vote on, starting the public consolation process to shutter the school.

If passed, the first public meeting is slated for June 2.
