Municipal officials in Prince Edward County say school closures and consolidations will have effects extending well beyond the classroom.
On Monday evening, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board members agreed to move forward with three separate accommodation reviews of various schools in Prince Edward County, Belleville and Centre Hastings.
With declining enrolment and aging infrastructure, the board faces capital renewal needs in the neighbourhood of $250 million over the next decade. In the past 10 years, enrolment has declined 26 per cent at the secondary level and 21 per cent in the board’s elementary schools.
In all, the review could effect 19 elementary and secondary schools with several closing and others amalgamating.
