CUPE 255 donates $10,000 to charities

As Thanksgiving preparations moved into high gear across Bruce, Grey, Huron and Wellington Counties, members of CUPE 255 gave thanks to their communities by giving back.

“We are all very fortunate to live and work in and near the communities we serve,” said Mark O’Leary, President of CUPE 255.

“But our members are also keenly aware that all too often there are others who are living here who are not as fortunate, and they’ve given me very clear direction to continue our efforts to support some of the incredible agencies that do such extraordinary work to help those who are less fortunate,” he added.

That direction from the members of CUPE 255 included a $5,000 donation to breakfast programs in the County of Grey, Bruce County and Wellington North, as well as a $5,000 donation to United Way Bruce Grey, in support of the Utility Assistance Program, which provides grants of up to $500 to low-income residents in arrears on their utility bills.

Since 2010, CUPE 255 members have donated $60,000 to charities throughout the region.

“While we have been fortunate over the past few years, our members recognize the tremendous support they have received when times weren’t as good for them. That goes a long way towards explaining why our members are so committed to giving back,” said O’Leary.

CUPE 255 represents more than 180 municipal workers employed at the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie, Bruce County Highways, Bruce Telecom, the Town of Hanover and the Township of Wellington North.
