Enrolment down provincially, Peel not alone in facing potential school closures

A Pupil Accommodation Review (PAR) is the public consultation process school boards undergo to close a school.

According to the Ministry of Education, there are 16 PARs underway across the province – one taking place through the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in the East Credit area. Trustees are expected to vote on the matter, which could spell the end for three Mississauga elementary schools, May 24.

Ministry spokesperson May Nazar told The News in an email statement that 11 of the PARs currently taking place in Ontario are at the elementary level, while the rest are at the high school level, or a combination of both.

Though closing a high school appears less common at the moment, the Peel District School Board is gearing up for a PAR calling for the closure of Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School (founded in 1956) in south Mississauga.

Trustees decide whether to begin the process at Tuesday’s board meeting.
