Honey Harbour community rallying behind schools threatened with closure

HONEY HARBOUR – It’s not over, till it’s over.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, approximately 50 people from the Honey Harbour community gathered at the Baxter Ward Community Centre to discuss the fate of their schools.

Two schools are located within Honey Harbour – Honey Harbour Public School with Trillium Lakelands District School Board and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School with Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

At a regular board meeting of Trillium Lakelands on Oct. 25, the board approved an accommodation review to take place for Honey Harbour Public School, with administration making the recommendation that the school close at the end of the 2016/2017 school year. The closure would result in students being transferred via an express bus to Glen Orchard Public School, a distance of more than 56 kilometres. Board staff estimate bus ride times of approximately 60 minutes. The school is currently operating at 87 per cent capacity with 40 students enrolled in 46 available spaces.
