Hundreds of Peel’s classrooms could soon be closed, says board director

We’ve heard about a school closing, but what about a classroom?

That’s what’s likely to happen at about half of the schools in the Peel District School Board by month’s end when enrolment numbers are known.

Education director Tony Pontes couldn’t put an exact number on how many “empty classrooms” will close at both the elementary and secondary level, but he estimates that the amount will be in the “hundreds.”

“I suspect in every school where there is an empty classroom, or where they are under capacity, that we will have to be looking at some kind of savings through classroom closures,” he said.
