Niagara jail guards could be in a position to go on strike in the new year if they reject a proposed contract with the provincial government next week.
On Dec. 8 and 9, members of Ontario Public Sector Employee Union Local 252 will, along with their comrades across Ontario, vote on the contract proposed by Queen’s Park.
Union leaders are advising their members to vote against the deal, saying it doesn’t address wage and benefits concerns, nor key mental health issues.
“We’re absolutely recommending they vote against this,” said Local 252 president John Mengia. “We’ve been at this for 18 months and it is beyond frustrating that the government came back with this offer.”
