Keep Hydro Public: Next Stop Beaches—East York

The Beaches—East York launch of the Keep Hydro Public campaign will be kicking off this Saturday!

The Keep Hydro Public campaign impacts every CUPE member. Privatization means hydro rates will go up. And when costs skyrocket, there is no doubt that our employers will go after our collective agreements to cut corners.

The Liberals have announced they are selling more shares of Hydro One. This is not surprising news, and it will not deter us from continuing to build power on the ground to halt this sale.

It is crucial to show the Liberals that we’re not going anywhere—we’re going to fight what is blatantly an undemocratic process of privatization!

Recent Developments

On March 30, a Globe and Mail article revealed that the bankers in charge of the sale of Hydro One netted $29 million for the transaction. In return, the bankers sent guests to a Liberal fundraiser which raised over $162,000 for the party.

Within a week, the Liberals held a press conference to announce that the next 15% of Hydro One was going on the market. When CUPE members showed up to the press conference to learn more about the sale, they were blocked by two armed police officers—yet another sign that the Liberal government knows the sale of Hydro One has absolutely no legitimacy in public opinion.
