Layoff at Canadian Mental Health Association sparks union concern

PETERBOROUGH — The union representing workers of the Canadian Mental Health Association in the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes area are accusing the organization of trying to intimidate workers by laying off the president of Local 5258.

“Last week, the president of CUPE Local 5258 (Kirk Hillier) became the sole employee to be laid off from the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association for Haliburton, Kawartha and Pine Ridge,” reads a statement from CUPE issued Wednesday (May 18).

“This layoff took place a mere two months after the president led the local’s bargaining committee to reach its first collective agreement with the agency.

“To CUPE and its members, this action is seen as an attempt to intimidate workers and destabilize the union, which CMHA workers chose to represent them in their workplace.”
