Athens residents are being encouraged to have their say in the future of their public school.
About 60 people attended a rally in the Pineview gym on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 27. The public meeting was held in response to the decision by the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) earlier this fall to launch an accommodation review process involving many elementary and secondary facilities throughout the board.
The draft report initiating the review process identifies 16 schools for possible closure at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. An additional 13 schools – Pineview among them – are also being considered for closure depending on the availability of space at existing school sites, or on the condition that the board receives conditional approval from the ministry for facility upgrades or rebuilds. Pineview would fall into either the former or latter scenario depending on a confirmation of temporary needs. “Clarification is required as to whether 2-4 portables at Meadowview School would be acceptable to accommodate students from Pineview school until plans for an addition at Meadowview school could be finalized,” the draft stated.
