MPP Monte McNaughton accused the government of turning its back on rural communities

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton sharply criticized the Ontario government during Monday’s question period for the Liberals’ decision to “fast-track” accommodation review processes that could spell the closure of a number of schools, most of them located in rural communities.

The topic of rural school closures took over most of the question period Monday, Nov. 21, with members of the opposition parties grilling Premier Kathleen Wynne and Education Minister Mitzie Hunter over the issue. They argue the government’s decision would negatively impact rural communities and force children to spend countless hours on school buses each day.

According to provincial numbers, there are up to 600 schools across Ontario that are currently being underutilized due to declining enrolment and they could potentially be targeted for closure.
