Music teachers against classroom closures stage sing-in before Peel board meeting

The usual chatter among staff and trustees before a regular board meeting was drowned out Tuesday night by a group of elementary music teachers who sang in protest to pending classroom closures.

About 30 Peel District School Board (PDSB) teachers parked themselves in the atrium of the HJA Brown Education Centre with djembes and xylophones, belting out songs like The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Underneath the harmony was the sad note of classroom closures expected at the end of the month when enrolment numbers are tallied. Scott Moreash, PDSB associate director of instructional support services, said the estimated number is upwards of 300 classrooms.
