Ontario proposes changes to school immunization act to reduce vaccination suspensions

Ontario’s Liberal government has introduced legislation that would relieve parents of responsibility for reporting their children’s vaccination status and put the onus on medical practitioners administering the shots.

Proposed amendments to the Immunization of School Pupils Act would also require parents, who are considering not immunizing their children for non-medical reasons, to participate in a public health education session before getting a vaccine exemption.

If passed, the amendments would require health care providers to report any vaccines they administer to children and youth to the local public health unit.

Currently, parents are responsible for reporting their children’s immunization records the health unit.
