Peel District School Board raids savings to keep some music and French classrooms open this year

The Peel District School Board (PDSB) is dipping into its savings fund in hopes of preventing the closure of music and French classrooms in elementary schools this year.

The decision was reached at a Sept. 21 board meeting, where trustees directed administration to use “in-year savings” to clean a maximum of two permanent classrooms, or three in exceptional circumstances, at schools which fall below the Ministry Rated Capacity.

“We asked administration to review the possibility of finding a way to keep the rooms open while we explore a permanent solution,” said Janet McDougald, chair of the Peel board. “Offsetting a portion of the funding reduction provides needed breathing space while that process happens this year.”
