School board’s proposed cuts to special needs blasted

A group of parents is saying proposed cuts to special education will have detrimental effects on their children’s well-being and are asking trustees to reconsider.

Amanda Reid-Fenlong is a part-time Educational Assistant (EA) at the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), but she’s also a parent whose son, William, 13, requires a full-time EA and a rotating Social Service Worker for behavioural, developmental and physical issues.

She said one of the board’s proposed cuts – removing 30 minutes from EA prep-time – is short-sighted and damaging to children with special needs and their families and will undo progress her son has made to date.

An EA herself, she knows how crucial prep-time is.
