Schools serving learning disabled, deaf to remain open for now

Provincial schools serving deaf students and those with severe learning disabilities will remain open for the 2016-17 school year, Education Minister Liz Sandals said in a surprise announcement Wednesday — but the news wasn’t enough to placate parents and students who still plan to protest at the Ontario legislature.

Sandals insisted the decision to give the schools a reprieve had nothing to do with the Thursday rally, which is expected to draw supporters from across the province.

“I had committed to the parents as we were going around having the various meetings … that when we had finished the consultations (on the schools’ future) … that I would look whether we could reopen the process for the coming school year,” Sandals told reporters.
