Community advocates for preserving their schools are going on the road to demonstrate at Queen’s Park.
A Char-Lan District High School parent is organizing two buses, one that will depart Williamstown and another from Alexandria, which will make several stops along the way.
Heather Petrie and fellow community members are joining forces with the Ontario Alliance Against School Closures, which is representing other communities facing mass school closures.
All the parents who are doing this are taking time off, losing money out of pockets, to fight for this cause,” said Petrie, who became involved, even though her daughter likely won’t be affected by decisions next spring.
Petrie said Char-Lan and other rural schools represent a long continuity between generations which tie the social fabric closer.
She said it’s time the pro-school message landed on the front porch of the Liberal government.
The alliance was actually formed by Owen Sound and Sarnia parents to fight — unsuccessfully — school closures previous to this latest round that has 29 schools on the block in the Upper Canada District School Board.
