Wired glass already on its way out of Peel schools after reports of injuries

Wired glass, a product that typically appears in fire-rated doors in Peel schools, will no longer be considered safety glass by the federal government.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) confirms the change is expected to appear in the revised version of the new safety glazing standard to be released at the end of February by the Canadian General Standards Board.

The glass with wire mesh, used for purposes of fire resistance, will not be viewed as safety glass because it’s not impact resistant, according to PSPC.

The most recent injury in the Peel District School Board (PDSB) involving wired glass occurred last December at a Brampton school, spokesperson Carla Pereira said in an email.
